WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?

Allergies are physiological errors. The body reacts negatively to harmless substances, foods or stimuli. The word “allergy” comes from the Greek allos, meaning “other”.  It was first used in 1906 to refer to an "altered reaction" in the body's immune system.

An allergy reaction may occur when the body comes in contact with the allergen. This can occur through contact with the skin, inhalation, injection or ingestion of the substance.

The use of the word "allergy" has become a generic term to describe allergies, sensitivities and intolerances. The distinction of a true allergy based on circulating immunoglobulins is generally unknown by the general public. Therefore, the term "allergy" is now understood as a term for any negative reaction from exposure to a benign or harmful substance.

Conventional medical treatment and recommendations include: avoidance of the allergen, medications to reduce the symptoms of the allergic reaction or injections to desensitize the patient to the allergen. The medical classification of a "true allergy" requires an IgE-mediated response. However, there are also non-IgE-immune sensitivities as well as involvement with immunoglobulins IgA, IgG or IgG4.

HOW AAT WORKS

Gentle pressure is used to stimulate points on the back, which correspond with the major organ systems. According to traditional acupuncture theory, this stimulation relaxes the body and temporarily strengthens each of the major organ systems. During treatment, a subtle representation of the substance is introduced to the surface of the skin. Acupressure stimulation is then applied to reduce the stress load caused by the substance. The body associates the enhanced state with the substance, allowing for a more appropriate response.

The ability to condition physiology with an external stimulus was first demonstrated by Dr. Ivan Pavlov in 1903. He showed that the physiology of a dog could be conditioned or trained by associating food with an external stimulus in the form of a sound, produced by ringing a bell or a light. After conditioning, the dog would start salivating even though no food was present. A similar process occurs when associating an allergen with the strengthening of the major organs. The body associates the positive stimulus with the exposure to an allergen, perceiving it as beneficial instead of a threat, thus correcting its own erroneous response that caused the allergy.

The degree of stress on the organ systems, caused by an allergen, is proportional to the degree of the negative reaction. By easing the stress on the organ system involved, the related symptoms are also reduced, allowing for a positive conditioning effect.

An apple, normally recognized by the immune system as food, may very likely be flagged as an enemy if it is covered in pesticide. It is not just the concept of an apple that is flagged. The immune system is much more specific than that. You chew the apple in your mouth where it is mixed with digestive enzymes. It is then swallowed and broken down further in the stomach by acids. It becomes an assemblage of various chemical groups and molecules that are being absorbed and passed around through various organs. The process is mediated by hormones and other enzymes. It cannot be predicted at what point the immune system will decide to act.
